Community Power Corporation Awarded Small Modular Biopower Contract
CPC to identify markets for a new family of biomass-powered systems for electrification of rural communities
Denver, Colorado, USA ¾ Community Power Corporation (CPC), a US Corporation, has been awarded a contract under the US Department of Energy’s new Small Modular Biopower initiative. This cost-shared contract will greatly enhance CPC’s on-going efforts to identify and establish export markets for a new family of small-scale power systems able to use waste biomass resources for rural electrification and thermal applications such as crop drying and chilling. The contract will be administered by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado.
Robb Walt, president of CPC said, "This biopower initiative is tailor made for market-driven companies such as CPC that are focused on developing environmentally-friendly power systems that can be deployed on a commercially sustainable basis throughout the world. I believe that this award will position CPC to be the first renewable energy services company to apply a market-pull strategy to adapt biopower technologies to meet the unique needs of the world’s village power market. This award will enable CPC to apply its substantial on-the-ground experience and growing commercial presence in the international off-grid power markets to develop a new family of cost-effective biopower systems as a viable alternative to small-scale diesel or gasoline power plants."
CPC will initially evaluate the market potential for small modular biopower systems in three countries --- Brazil, Philippines and Indonesia. These countries have substantial renewable biomass resources and a combined total of nearly 50 million homes without access to electricity. In the world there are over 400 million homes without electricity, and most are located in regions that have sustainable quantities of waste agricultural residues suitable for small-scale power and thermal generation. In addition to its renewable energy joint venture in Indonesia, PT Bakrie Renewable Energy Systems, CPC plans to establish similar joint ventures in Brazil and the Philippines in the next year to meet the substantial demand for modern infrastructure services in the unserved regions of these countries.
